Former pastor of the City of David parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, has emphasized the financial demands of running a ministry, explaining that this is why God instituted tithing to meet the needs of His house. Speaking during the second service at Civic Centre on Sunday, Pastor Iluyomade said, “Ministry costs money—that’s why God said we should bring tithes so the needs of His house are met.
Regarding offerings, God said everyone should give according to how He has blessed them. Naturally, the rich should give more than those with less. We must give in proportion to our prosperity.” In his sermon titled “Giving,” Iluyomade urged Christians to understand biblical principles on tithes and offerings, warning against neglecting foundational aspects of faith such as holiness and righteousness.
Addressing misconceptions about giving, he said, “Your giving begins with your offering. Tithe belongs to God—10 per cent of your income belongs to Him. God knows mathematics. Many avoid reading Malachi 3, where God speaks about being robbed in tithes and offerings. We need to repent. If God calls us robbers, will any robber enter heaven? Let’s reflect on this.”
He also encouraged Christians to help the poor and needy, stressing that this is as important as paying tithes, especially in difficult times. The pastor revealed that his newly established ministry, The Family Fellowship, has secured a permanent site at Eko Atlantic, a gift from a generous church member.
He used the occasion to advocate for a spirit of generosity, describing giving as a sacrificial act that attracts God’s blessings.
“Many believers struggle with giving,” he said. “It is a principle that opens doors for blessings. Giving is not just about tithes but also about helping others.”
Demonstrating the message of generosity, two members of the congregation donated ₦4 million to Bethesda Home & School for the Blind during the service. Iluyomade urged worshippers to stay grounded in biblical teachings on giving, cautioning against false doctrines that could lead them astray.
“Be careful,” he warned, “because there are all kinds of doctrines flying around today. If you are not careful, you will miss it in this area, and that is the gospel truth.”
