Cross River State ex-Governor Donald Duke was sworn in on Sunday as a member of Ikeja-Alausa Central Rotary Club. The induction ceremony, which was hosted by Past District Governor of Rotary International District 9110, Rotarian (Otunba) Bola Onabadejo, and was attended by other leaders in Rotary, was the highlight of the fourth anniversary ceremony of Rotary Club of Ikeja-Alausa Central.Rotarian Duke was specifically invited by the club’s President, Rotarian Muyiwa Akintunde, and spoke at length from Rotary’s Four-Way test.
He suggested that Rotary ideals be lived by institutional organizations and individuals as a lifestyle. Referring to the contention that society would have been a better place, particularly for the poor and underprivileged, if such selfless principles were adopted, the new Rotarian stated: ‘The real wretchedness is not the people around you, but you yourself’.
He described life in terms of three circles of 25 years each
Three circles of 25 years
The first 25, Duke said, is the learning season to live and the learning season to learn. The second is learning when and how to earn, and the third, which drives all individuals over age 75, is the season to give.
Duke said that giving is not just in material form, but also giving of time and talent, part of Rotary “Service Above Self” motto.
He was formally welcomed into his active, and not honorary, membership of Ikeja-Alausa Central Rotary Club, the first of five new members to be welcomed at the event.
PDG Onabadejo, the Father of the Day, insisted that he had always held Duke in high esteem because of his life-altering and impactful projects while he was Governor and his other people first principles.
He explained that Nigeria would require more individuals to be living as Duke, welcoming visitors openly and not giving any airs.
The induction ceremony was led by District Governor Nominee Designate of District 9111, Rotarian Sam Ayetutu.
He was aided by the Assistant Governor for Rotary Club of Ikeja-Alausa Central, Rotarian Ibraheem Adebayo; Past Assistant Governor, Rotarian Kayode Owolabi (the first AG of the club); and District 9111 Executive Secretary, AG Valentine Shomoye (former AG of the club), among other senior Rotarians and great personalities.
The other inducted members were Rotarian Temitope Faborode, Rotarian Niyi Amosu, Rotarian Ayodele Omirin and Rotarian Precious Muotoh.
