Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has been widely condemned for his opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State.
In a vituperative statement, former Delta State lawmaker and former Commissioner, Hon. Chief Evance Ochuko Ivwurie, attributed Oborevwori for plunging Delta State into a needless political war against the President. He vowed that the seat of the governor was not just irresponsible but was also inimical to the interest of the state.
Justifying Tinubu’s move, Ivwurie described the Rivers state of emergency as a constitutional and necessary step to prevent the state from descending into anarchy. He likened Tinubu’s move to that of former American President Harry S. Truman, commending him for taking bold action in the midst of the power struggle between suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Rivers lawmakers, which he alleged had paralyzed governance and threatened Nigeria’s economy.
Quoting Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, Ivwurie argued that Tinubu had acted within his constitutional powers to stabilize the state and safeguard national property. Ivwurie denounced the resistance of Oborevwori as misdirecting party interest at the expense of national safety.
“It is completely irresponsible for the incompetent Governor Oborevwori to get Delta State entangled in his resistance against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by signing on to a frivolous lawsuit,” Ivwurie said.
He also accused Oborevwori of appearing to stand against the President yet privately making entreaties to cross over into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.
Politically aside, Ivwurie warned that economic survival in Delta State was at risk. He pointed out the reality that since the state survived on federal oil revenue, if Rivers was in disarray, such could have real consequences on Delta.
“The governor’s defiance of the state of emergency is particularly alarming in the context of the security crisis in Rivers, which threatens the economy and livelihood of Nigerians, particularly Deltans,” Ivwurie said.
He urged Deltans to hold Oborevwori accountable for what he termed “reckless leadership” and urged the governor to shift his stance, warning against frittering away state resources on a legal battle with the federal government.
According to Ivwurie, Tinubu’s action has already given hope back to Rivers State, and halted further increase in the crisis.
“I strongly advise the incompetent Governor Oborevwori to rethink his position and refrain from bringing Delta State to his unholy alliance against President Tinubu. He should prudently utilize state resources, rather than waste them on politically motivated legal battles that profit him personally,” he concluded.
