Elon Musk’s War on Washington: The Billionaire Reshaping Government from the Inside

A striking new Time magazine cover features billionaire Elon Musk seated behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, symbolizing his unprecedented influence within the Trump administration.

The accompanying cover story, titled “Inside Elon Musk’s War on Washington,” details his aggressive push for government reform as the head of Trump’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Musk, a major supporter and donor to President Trump’s campaign, has wasted no time in making his mark.

His cost-cutting measures—ranging from job cuts to agency buyouts—have drawn fierce backlash from Democrats and federal employees alike.

His most controversial move so far? A sweeping overhaul of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which he has accused of being filled with “radical-left Marxists.”

Thousands of employees have been placed on administrative leave as part of his efforts to downsize the agency.

The cover story argues that no private citizen in American history has wielded as much direct influence over the federal government as Musk does now.

While previous administrations have relied on billionaire advisors, Musk’s role goes far beyond that—he has been given a mandate to reshape government institutions in alignment with Trump’s agenda.

“So far, Musk appears accountable to no one but President Trump, who handed his campaign benefactor a sweeping mandate to bring the government in line with his vision,” the article states.

The impact of Musk’s reforms is already rippling through Washington. “Budgets will be hacked.

Valuable programs will be eliminated. Career civil servants will be purged, replaced with political appointees whose primary qualification is apparent fealty to the President,” the article warns.

While Musk has repeatedly dismissed speculation about a future presidential run, the idea of “President Musk” is gaining traction in political circles.

Trump himself has downplayed the rumors, while Musk sees them as an attempt to drive a wedge between him and the president.
