Elon Musk Unveils Grok 3 AI Chatbot Amid Regulatory Concerns

Elon Musk

Tech billionaire and xAI founder Elon Musk has officially launched Grok 3, the latest iteration of his artificial intelligence chatbot, positioning it as a major competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek.

Unveiled on Monday, February 17, Grok 3 boasts ten times the computational power of its predecessor, which debuted in August 2023. Musk describes the chatbot as “scary smart” and claims it surpasses existing AI models in reasoning and accuracy.

During the launch, Musk highlighted the chatbot’s mission:

“Grok exists to understand the universe. Our goal is to create an AI that relentlessly seeks the truth, even when it challenges political correctness.”

The chatbot has been trained on synthetic data and features self-correction mechanisms designed to reduce AI-generated misinformation, or “hallucinations.”

Initially, Grok 3 will be available exclusively to Premium+ subscribers on X (formerly Twitter), with plans for a broader release later. Musk’s latest AI venture comes amid reports that he is working with former U.S. President Donald Trump to reshape federal agencies, potentially removing regulatory barriers that impact his businesses—including Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink.

This development has raised ethical concerns, as many of these agencies oversee industries where Musk holds significant influence. Critics warn that his political connections could create conflicts of interest in AI governance and business regulations. Grok 3’s release intensifies the ongoing AI race, with major players like OpenAI and Chinese startup DeepSeek pushing innovation in the field.

Musk’s history with OpenAI adds another layer to this competition. As a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, he invested $45 million but parted ways with the company in 2018. Since then, tensions have escalated, especially after OpenAI’s ChatGPT revolutionized the industry in 2022—without Musk’s involvement.

Recently, Musk attempted to buy OpenAI for nearly $100 billion, but the offer was reportedly rejected by OpenAI’s board, further fueling the rivalry between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
