Edwin Clark University (ECU) in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State has been closed following a mass protest by students over what they described as inhumane treatment by the school management. On Monday, hundreds of students took to the streets carrying placards with inscriptions such as “We are struggling and suffering for water, electricity, and others,” “They only hear the language of riot,” and “Enough is enough.”
One of the aggrieved students, identified simply as John, expressed frustration over the persistent lack of potable water, erratic electricity supply, and the non-functional health centre, among other grievances.
“We have endured avoidable hardships for too long. This was meant to be a peaceful protest, but students were pushed beyond their limits,” he said.
This is not the first time students at ECU have protested the lack of basic amenities necessary for their well-being. However, the latest demonstration has led to the university’s closure, raising concerns over the institution’s ability to address its students’ welfare needs.
