Media personality Dotun has voiced concerns about the fleeting appeal of Afrobeats songs released over the past five years. He argued that the fast-paced nature of the music industry, driven by a relentless pursuit of numbers, has led to an oversaturated market and a decline in the lasting impact of songs.
In a post on his X account, Dotun explained that many songs are quickly forgotten, not because they lack quality, but due to the sheer volume of music flooding the industry. This overwhelming output, he noted, leaves listeners unable to connect deeply with individual tracks.
“Most of the songs made now in the last five years have no longevity.
You might not remember them, not because they’re not good enough, but because the market is oversaturated with so many songs made in haste.
It’s a race to be heard, a numbers game over anything else,” he wrote.
Dotun also highlighted the pressure Nigerian artists face, claiming that many create music to meet audience demands or compete with others, rather than following their artistic instincts.
“The music industry in Nigeria is pressured. Some songs these artistes make lately are to satisfy an attention-seeking audience; they compete with themselves over satisfying their conscience.
If we let them be selfish with their creativity sometimes, you will get the best out of them,” he stated.
