Nigerian socialite and pop culture critic Daniel Regha has shared his candid review of Davido’s newly released album, 5ive — and he’s not holding back.
Taking to his social media page, Regha graded the project a low 2 out of 10, citing what he calls weak lyrics, unsuccessful collaborations, and discriminatory lyrics.
In his review, he mentioned tracks like “With You” featuring Omah Lay as a missed opportunity, describing the collab as a “fumble” with nothing much to write home about.
He also tore apart “Titanium”, featuring Chris Brown, stating that both artists were not on the same page and the song was monotonous — comparing it to Davido’s previous song “Anything.”
Regha did not spare Davido’s pen game either. He believed the singer’s wordplay and rhyme game were poor, and he cited lyrics like “Wheel-barrow” and “Toy-toy-toy” in songs like “R&B” and “Don’t Know” as examples of lazy writing.
One of the most important things he highlighted was the use of the word “Orọbọ” in the song “10 Kilo”, which he called body-shaming and discriminatory.
’10 Kilo’ promotes body shaming, as ‘Orọbọ’ is a word that is utilized to taunt,” Regha stated.
He also questioned the authenticity of lines like “face me, I face you” in Davido’s song “CFMF”, quoting the discrepancy between those lines and Davido’s well-documented wealthy background.
Regha also indicated that a few of the songs on the album sounded as if they were remnants from other projects and criticized songs like “Lately” for addressing a number of bewildering topics and lacking a good second verse.
However, he conceded that Davido made smart choices with the inclusion of international artists on some tracks, despite such tracks not being the hit type.
For him, production and Davido’s sound are the saving graces for the album.
“The project only sounds good because of Davido’s hype and sound. But lyrically, it has nothing to offer that is new. Good beats though. It’s a 2/10. No offense.”
