Court Sacks Rivers PDP Chairman, Nullifies 2024 Congresses

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has removed Hon. Chukwuemeka Aaron as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and nullified the party’s ward, local government, and state congresses conducted in July 2024. Justice Stephen Jumbo delivered the ruling, which comes weeks after a similar High Court decision nullified the congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, leading to the removal of Chief Tony Okocha as APC chairman.

The judgment stemmed from a dispute over the legitimacy of the PDP congresses, reportedly organized by a faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike. It is noteworthy that on July 20, 2024, Justice Charles Wali of a Rivers State High Court had issued an injunction preventing the PDP from conducting the said congresses.
