A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has remanded Inspector Effiong Bassey, the police officer who shot at passersby on Sunday near the Nigerian Correctional Centre. The officer is to be detained pending the hearing of the matter on April 14, 2025.
Bassey allegedly started shooting after a heated argument with his fellow officers at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters, killing 41-year-old Mrs. Ijeoma Wilson, wife of a fellow officer. Some others were wounded with varying levels of bullet wounds.
In court, Superintendent Otu Ubangah, being the Officer in Charge of Legal at the Cross River State Police Command, moved an ex parte motion, requesting the remand of the accused pending legal advice from the State Prosecutor.
Chief Magistrate Mercy Ene granted the application, adjourning the case to April 14, 2025, for a report from the State Department for Public Prosecution (DPP).
