Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has granted bail to former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, who is facing a N110 billion money laundering case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The court admitted Bello to bail on Thursday in the sum of N500 million with two sureties in like amount. This decision comes after Justice Anenih had initially rejected his bail application on December 10, stating it was filed prematurely as the defendant was neither in custody nor before the court at the time.
Bello, along with two co-defendants, pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charges brought against them. During Thursday’s hearing, Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, urged the court to grant bail following discussions with the prosecution to ensure a speedy trial.
Daudu also requested a review of the bail conditions, asking that properties offered as sureties not be limited to Maitama but include other locations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The prosecution counsel, Olukayode Enitan, SAN, confirmed the discussions with the defense team and raised no objections to the application.
In granting the bail, the court struck out a further affidavit filed by the defense, following its withdrawal by Daudu to avoid making the matter contentious.
The case is set to proceed, with both parties expressing a commitment to an expedited trial.
