The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC)/Transparency International in Nigeria has commended Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal for launching Operation Safe Corridor, an initiative aimed at addressing insecurity through non-kinetic means.
Governor Lawal described the program as a special operation focused on “disarmament, de-radicalisation, and reintegration of repentant bandits who surrender unconditionally.” The initiative seeks to reintegrate them into society while reducing reliance on military force.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, CISLAC welcomed this shift, stating that “transitioning from kinetic to non-kinetic approaches aligns with efforts to decisively tackle banditry.” The group noted that the program provides an opportunity for individuals drawn into banditry due to poverty, illiteracy, and socio-economic hardships to reform and reintegrate peacefully.
CISLAC urged the government to implement comprehensive rehabilitation and socio-economic empowerment programs to prevent re-radicalization and minimize potential security threats. The organization also called for intensified efforts to disrupt banditry at all stages, from ideation and recruitment to indoctrination and violence.
Additionally, CISLAC emphasized the need for public-private partnerships to boost community awareness and counter-extremism education. The group further stressed the importance of providing psycho-social support, compensation, and reconstruction efforts for victims of banditry to help alleviate trauma and socio-economic losses.
Finally, CISLAC called on the federal government to collaborate with Zamfara State to ensure the successful implementation of Operation Safe Corridor, reinforcing non-military strategies to restore peace and security in the region.
