US Commits Nearly $2bn to Boost Nigeria’s Health Sector, FG Pledges $3bn More

‍The United States has pledged nearly $2 billion in grant funding to support Nigeria’s health sector over a five-year period, from 2026 to 2030, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and improving health security across the country. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the governments of Nigeria and the United States. Under the agreement, the US government will provide close to $2 billion in grants between April 2026 and December 2030 to support Nigeria’s health priorities. In addition, the Nigerian government has committed to raising about $3 billion in domestic resources for the health sector within the same period. According to the statement, Nigeria plans to dedicate at least six per cent of executed annual federal and state budgets to health. This commitment, already reflected in the proposed 2026 budget, is expected to generate roughly $3 billion in local health financing over five years. The joint funding is aimed at expanding access to quality primary healthcare services nationwide, while also strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to public health emergencies. The Federal Government said the partnership reflects Nigeria’s determination to build a resilient and sustainable health system, gradually reduce dependence on foreign aid, and ensure consistent long-term investment in healthcare. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, described the MoU as a major milestone in safeguarding the health of Nigerians and boosting the country’s overall resilience. Beyond funding, the agreement sets out a framework for cooperation in tackling infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. It also covers improved disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness and response, stronger laboratory systems, and enhanced biosafety standards for handling pathogen samples. The MoU further provides for increased support for frontline health workers, upgrades to health data systems, and better access to essential medicines and health commodities across the country.

Bayelsa Gov Orders Autopsy on Deputy Governor’s Death, Urges Public to Avoid Speculation

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has ordered a medical autopsy to determine the exact cause of death of his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, at the age of 60. The governor gave the directive while receiving former President Goodluck Jonathan, who paid a condolence visit to the Bayelsa State Government and the family of the late deputy governor at the Government House in Yenagoa. Diri warned against the politicisation of Ewhrudjakpo’s death, particularly on social media, and appealed to the public to respect the period of mourning in the state. In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, the governor said the autopsy was necessary to put an end to rumours and speculation surrounding the deputy governor’s passing. He urged residents to focus on celebrating Ewhrudjakpo’s life, dedication and service to Bayelsa State. “I have directed that an autopsy be carried out to reveal the cause of his death. There is a lot of unnecessary speculation on social media. If anyone is issuing a statement to eulogise him, let it end there and allow us to mourn him because the state is in a mourning mood,” Diri said. The governor noted that the state government had declared three working days of mourning in honour of the late deputy governor and encouraged residents to show solidarity, as demonstrated by the former president’s visit. Earlier, former President Goodluck Jonathan described Ewhrudjakpo’s death as a painful loss to Bayelsa State and the nation. He recalled the late deputy governor’s consistent support for programmes of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Foundation, noting that Ewhrudjakpo often represented the governor at foundation events both within and outside Nigeria. “For me, he was someone my foundation and I will never forget. He represented the governor in all our programmes. Even outside the country, he did the same,” Jonathan said, adding that Ewhrudjakpo recently mobilised state officials for the foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration in Abuja. Jonathan described the late deputy governor as humble, hardworking and deeply committed to public service, saying his work ethic should serve as a lesson to others in government. “I was also a deputy governor, but he worked harder than me. He hardly appeared to rest. This is a lesson for all of us to find time to rest,” he said, praying for God’s comfort for the state and Ewhrudjakpo’s family. After the condolence visit, Governor Diri and former President Jonathan visited Ewhrudjakpo’s wife, Barrister Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, at their residence within the Government House complex.

King Charles to Scale Back Cancer Treatment After “Positive Progress” From Early Diagnosis

King Charles III has revealed he’ll be reducing his cancer treatment in the coming year, crediting early detection and following medical advice for his steady recovery. The 77-year-old monarch shared the encouraging news in a televised message promoting cancer screening awareness across Britain. His message was simple but powerful: catching cancer early can save your life. Speaking candidly about his own experience, Charles said early detection made all the difference in his treatment journey and has allowed him to maintain “a full and active life even while undergoing treatment.” It’s been nearly two years since the King went public with his cancer diagnosis, a remarkably open move that broke with royal protocol. Traditionally, the monarchy keeps health matters strictly private, but Charles chose transparency to prevent rumors and raise global awareness about cancer. His decision had an immediate impact. Cancer Research UK reported a 33% spike in website visits right after the announcement, with people across the country searching for information on symptoms and early detection. That’s exactly what Charles hoped for, turning his personal struggle into a teaching moment that might save others. Buckingham Palace hasn’t disclosed the specific type of cancer, but confirmed it was discovered during treatment for an enlarged prostate. Further medical tests revealed the cancer, which Charles has been treating since early 2024. The fact that he’s now scaling back treatment suggests doctors are pleased with how he’s responding, a hopeful sign for both the King and the millions watching his journey. Charles’s message comes at a time when health officials are pushing hard for more people to take advantage of cancer screening programs.
