The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded Nigeria a victory and full three points in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, which was postponed earlier this month.
The Super Eagles were set to face Libya at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi on October 15.
However, upon their arrival at Al Abaq Airport, the Nigerian team was reportedly held for over 20 hours without food or drinks.
Following this ordeal, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the team’s withdrawal from the match and instructed them to return home.
In response, the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) stated that the flight diversion faced by Nigeria was not intentional.
Nonetheless, after conducting an investigation, CAF found Libya guilty of violating Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
The ruling confirmed that Libya forfeited the match, resulting in a 3-0 victory for Nigeria. Additionally, the LFF was fined USD 50,000, which must be paid within 60 days of the notification.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized that the organization will not tolerate unsportsmanlike conduct or unfair treatment in African football.
With this decision, Nigeria now sits at the top of Group D with 10 points from four matches.
