Ogun State Set for Transformation as Governor Abiodun Revives Sports Ahead of National Festival
The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has lauded Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his transformative efforts in revitalizing the state’s sports sector. This commendation comes as Ogun prepares to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed “Ogun 2024.” In a statement by his media adviser, Kola Daniel, Olopade highlighted the state’s impressive readiness for the event. “Even before the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was constituted, when Nilayo Sports Management bidded on behalf of Ogun State, it was clear Ogun was ready. During inspections, technical directors from various states praised the facilities. Ogun’s readiness was evident,” he said. Reflecting on past challenges, Olopade, a former commissioner for sports in Ogun, noted that the state’s sporting legacy faced decline until Governor Abiodun’s administration initiated a revival. The governor’s emphasis on grassroots sports promotion, infrastructure development, and talent nurturing has been instrumental in empowering youth and positioning sports as a viable industry in Ogun. Key upgrades include the renovation of the MKO Abiola International Stadium, with improvements to the VIP section, football pitch replacement, refurbished tracks, and a new swimming pool under construction. Additional facilities, such as state-of-the-art tennis and handball courts, have been built to complement existing infrastructure. Hon. Olopade praised the governor’s commitment, saying, “Governor Abiodun’s investments in sports and youth empowerment are unparalleled. His vision for sports extends beyond entertainment, aiming to create a thriving industry that attracts investments and benefits the youth.” With the festival fast approaching, Ogun State’s dedication to excellence and lasting legacy shines through. Governor Abiodun’s initiatives have not only revived the state’s sports landscape but also laid a strong foundation for future generations. Amorim’s Misery Deepens as Manchester United Suffer Humiliating 3-0 Loss to Bournemouth
Manchester United endured another disastrous outing on Sunday, succumbing to a crushing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The loss marked Ruben Amorim’s fourth defeat in nine games since taking over as manager, leaving the club languishing in 13th place ahead of Christmas. Amorim, who controversially left Marcus Rashford out of the squad again, described the result as one of the toughest moments of his short tenure. “It’s really tough for everybody, especially the fans who are disappointed and tired,” Amorim admitted in a post-match press conference. “It is my responsibility to coach them, but everything feels harder at this moment.” Bournemouth capitalized on United’s frailty at set pieces, taking the lead through Dean Huijsen’s header from Ryan Christie’s free-kick. United have now conceded seven goals from set pieces in their last six games, a recurring issue Amorim acknowledged needs urgent attention. “We have to improve set pieces,” he said. “But we didn’t lose solely because of that. We created more chances but didn’t score. When everything is against us, one mistake makes us more nervous, and the anxiety spreads throughout the stadium.” The match followed a familiar pattern of poor game management, echoing United’s League Cup exit against Tottenham, where they conceded twice in quick succession. Bournemouth exploited similar vulnerabilities, netting twice in three minutes during the second half to seal the rout. For the first time since 1989, United find themselves in the bottom half of the table on Christmas Day, a stark reminder of the uphill battle Amorim faces to restore the club’s fortunes. Haaland Takes Responsibility as City’s Slump Deepens in Villa Defeat
Erling Haaland criticized his own performance following Manchester City’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday but reaffirmed the squad’s unwavering support for manager Pep Guardiola amidst a surprising crisis. City, reigning Premier League champions, were left searching for answers after suffering their sixth defeat in eight league matches. Nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool, having played two games more, their title defence appears increasingly daunting. Haaland, who remains level with Mohamed Salah atop the goalscoring charts, admitted he has underperformed, scoring just three league goals since October. “First, I’m looking at myself,” the 24-year-old told TNT Sports. “I haven’t been scoring my chances. I have to do better. Confidence is crucial, and right now, it’s not where it should be. We need to stay positive and push through.” Despite growing pressure, Haaland expressed full confidence in Guardiola, citing his track record. “He’s won the Premier League six times in seven years. He always finds solutions. We believe in him, and now we must work harder than ever,” Haaland stated. Guardiola remained optimistic, emphasizing trust in his players. “We must stay positive. I have incredible trust in these guys,” he said. “It’s all in our minds now. Step by step, we’ll regain our confidence and get back on track.” City’s latest setback came via goals from Jhon Durán and Morgan Rogers, with Phil Foden scoring a late consolation. Guardiola has given the team a two-day break to reset mentally as they aim to recover their form. Related Posts 10 years after marriage, Comedienne Real Warri Pikin, husband set for ‘dream wedding’. Les Ferdinand: Saka’s Injury Could Be a Blessing in Disguise for Arsenal
Former England and Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand believes Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury, sustained during Arsenal’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace, might benefit the Gunners in the long run. Despite goals from Gabriel Jesus (2), Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz securing a dominant win, Arsenal’s triumph came at a cost as Saka was forced off in the first half. Manager Mikel Arteta later described the injury as “worrying.” However, Ferdinand sees a silver lining, suggesting that the enforced rest during the busy Christmas period could rejuvenate the young winger. Speaking to Arsenal News Central, Ferdinand said: “If there was a perfect time to get injured, it would be now. If he’s going to be out for any spell, it would be over this Christmas period. There’s no Champions League, which gives him time to rest. “He hasn’t had a significant break in a long time. If he takes this time off, it could put Arsenal in a strong position as the season intensifies in January and February.” With Arsenal competing on multiple fronts, Saka’s recovery could prove pivotal in maintaining their title challenge. Mbappé Stars as Real Madrid Outclass Sevilla 4-2 to Climb to Second in LaLiga
Kylian Mbappé delivered a stellar performance, scoring a sensational opener and providing an assist as Real Madrid defeated Sevilla 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday. The victory moves Los Blancos to second place in LaLiga, narrowing the gap to leaders Atletico Madrid to one point heading into the winter break. Mbappé ignited the match with a thunderous strike from outside the box in the 10th minute. Federico Valverde doubled the advantage 10 minutes later with a long-range effort, and Rodrygo added a third in the 34th minute, converting Lucas Vázquez’s precise cross. Sevilla briefly responded a minute later when Isaac Romero headed home to make it 3-1. However, Brahim Diaz restored Real Madrid’s three-goal cushion in the 53rd minute, finishing off a brilliant team move orchestrated by Mbappé and Vázquez. Dodi Lukebakio pulled one back for the visitors in the 85th minute, but it was too late to spark a comeback as Real Madrid comfortably saw out the match. The result puts them two points clear of Barcelona, who dropped to third after a 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid on Saturday. NNPCL Clarifies Port Harcourt Refinery is Fully Operational, Dismissing Shutdown Claims
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reassured the public that the Port Harcourt Refinery is fully operational, refuting reports suggesting it had been shut down. The refinery, which boasts a production capacity of 60,000 barrels per day (bpd), resumed operations in November 2024 following extensive rehabilitation efforts. NNPCL confirmed that the refinery is now playing an important role in bolstering local fuel supply. Recent reports from The PUNCH raised concerns about a potential shutdown of the refinery on December 13, 2024, citing the observation of fewer trucks at the refinery’s yard, which led to speculation that petrol loading operations had come to a halt. However, NNPCL quickly addressed these concerns. Olufemi O. Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, responded to the claims, emphasizing that they were completely unfounded. According to Soneye, the refinery continues to operate without interruption and that fuel loading operations are ongoing as planned. Soneye stated, “The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery which was re-streamed two months ago has been shut down. “We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false as the refinery is fully operational as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparation for the day’s loading operation is currently ongoing.” Related Posts Scores killed as unknown gunmen attack Taraba community. Kogi Governor Celebrates as Ex-Governor Yahaya Bello Secures Bail
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, expressed immense joy on Friday, December 20, following the release of his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, from the Kuje Correctional Facility. Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, is facing charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including allegations of money laundering, corruption, and an N80 billion fraud purportedly committed during his tenure. On Thursday, December 19, Justice MaryAnne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, granted Bello bail in the sum of N500 million. The bail conditions required three sureties, each owning properties in prime areas of Abuja, including Maitama, Guzape, or Asokoro. Bello was also ordered to surrender his passport and seek court approval for any travel outside Nigeria. The former governor met the bail conditions and was released on Friday. Videos shared online captured jubilant scenes of Governor Ododo and supporters welcoming Bello upon his release from the Kuje Custodial Centre.
