The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), in collaboration with the Defence Headquarters, organized a special golf tournament in Abuja to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD). The event, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) Golf Club, attracted over 200 participants, including top military personnel and dignitaries.
The tournament, a tribute to Nigeria’s fallen and retired heroes, honors servicemen who fought in World War I, World War II, and the Nigerian Civil War. The ceremonial tee-off was performed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, represented by Major General E.A.P. Undiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
A Tribute to Sacrifice and Service
Speaking at the event, General Musa emphasized the significance of the tournament in celebrating those who paid the supreme price for the nation’s peace and unity, as well as veterans still alive who served with distinction. He highlighted the federal government’s commitment to supporting military efforts to restore peace and security across the country.
“This golf tournament is not just about sports; it is a celebration of the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes and a reminder of our collective responsibility to honor their legacy,” Musa said.
Golf as a Tool for Unity and Health
Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, President of the NGF, lauded President Bola Tinubu for providing a fitting tribute to the nation’s heroes. He also praised the partnership with the Armed Forces, noting that golf serves as a platform for fostering camaraderie, promoting physical health, and advancing sports development in Nigeria.
“This initiative is a testament to the military’s culture of honoring its best, both living and departed. It also demonstrates the unifying power of golf as a sport that brings people together in friendship and shared purpose,” Runsewe stated.
Building on Tradition
Air Vice Marshal B.D. Solomon, Captain of the GEJ Golf Club and Vice President of the NGF, explained that the tournament, initiated two years ago, was conceived as a means to bring together retired and serving military personnel.
“No sport unites retired and serving military personnel like golf. This tournament creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and provides an opportunity to remember our fallen heroes and celebrate those still in service,” Solomon said.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of honoring those who have dedicated their lives to the nation, fostering a spirit of unity, and promoting the game of golf as a tool for national development.
