Nigerian artist Adekunle Gold, also known as AG Baby, is set to co-produce a groundbreaking documentary titled The Odyssey, which celebrates the rich history and global influence of Yoruba music.

The film will trace the journey of Yoruba music over the last century, from its roots in the 1930s to its current worldwide appeal through genres like Afrobeats. Produced by White House Productions, the documentary promises to dive deep into the evolution of Yoruba music, highlighting the roles of key figures, cultural moments, and traditional genres such as Sakara, Apala, Ajiwere, Fuji, Juju, Highlife, and Afrobeats.

In a statement released on Wednesday, January 22, the production team revealed that The Odyssey will feature interviews with prominent Yoruba artists, band members, promoters, and cultural influencers. The documentary also aims to explore the influence of religion, particularly Christianity and Islam, on Yoruba music over the years.

“The documentary will organize Yoruba music’s chronological history into pre- and post-colonial eras, presenting its evolution through captivating stories and perspectives,” the statement reads.

“It will provide an artistic and entertaining narrative that resonates with local and global audiences while honoring the cultural significance of Yoruba music.”

With Bobo Omotayo as the executive producer and direction by Abba T. Makama, The Odyssey aims to become a landmark project.
