A 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, Christiana Idowu, has been abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos.
According to a family source who spoke with Punch on condition of anonymity on Monday, August 26, 2024, the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N3 million before releasing the student.
Christiana was reportedly en route from her home in the Itaoluwo area of Ikorodu to the University of Lagos in Yaba, where she was participating in her industrial training, when she was abducted last week. After an initial period of being unreachable, the kidnappers contacted her family through her phone, insisting on the N3 million ransom.
The family source revealed that after numerous pleas, the kidnappers agreed to lower the ransom to N350,000, which the family paid into a specified account. However, despite the payment, the kidnappers refused to release Christiana, instead demanding further proof of the transaction.
“They are communicating with the family through her WhatsApp, and they demanded N3m. We appealed to them, and it was reduced to N1m, then N500,000, and later, they asked that we pay N350,000,” the source said.
After making the payment, the kidnappers continued to withhold Christiana, requesting a bank statement as proof of the transaction before considering her release. The family has since reported the incident to the police and is now seeking the intervention of the government and the public in securing Christiana’s safe return.
“We have reported the matter to the police and can not handle it as a family again. We are urging the government and the public to come to our aid,” the source said.
