Several attempts by numerous state governors to adopt the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have been forcefully resisted by civil servants, stalling its adoption and passage into law in 25 Nigerian states. The CPS, as suggested by the Pension Reform Act (PRA) 2004, demands that the employer and employees save into a Retirement Saving Account (RSA) to ensure the long-term sustainability of the pensions. However, six of them Akwa Ibom, Borno, Kwara, Plateau, Cross River, and Yobe have yet to present the CPS bill, while another 19 have yet to implement it despite having passed the legislation. Only Lagos, Kaduna, Ekiti, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Benue, Anambra, Jigawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are fully compliant, says the National Pension Commission (PENCOM). Those states that passed the law but did not implement it are: Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara. In Kogi State, for example, labour unions stopped the implementation of the scheme in 2021, complaining about outstanding entitlements of civil servants and insufficient consultation. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) also discouraged adoption, expressing concerns about the scheme’s performance across other states. Kwara State also has not implemented CPS. The chairman of NLC, Comrade Murtala Olayinka, urged the government to act fast, even as reports have emerged of public servants objecting to enrollment in the scheme. There is a pending pension bill in the House of Assembly in Plateau State. Civil servants and union leaders remain skeptical, arguing that even federal workers under the CPS are not faring well. The bill got stuck in the 9th Assembly, and current officials report that nothing has changed. Cross River State also saw fierce resistance from labour. The TUC chairman, Comrade Monday Ogbodum, revealed that organised labour in the past held up Assembly to prevent the bill from passing through. Despite an undercover midnight passing by legislators, implementation is also at a deadlock due to protest and skepticism. The governor’s spokesman, Nsa Gill, said that while Governor Bassey Otu is keen to operate the scheme, he shelved progress in deference to public outcry and resistance from labour. He added that the scheme may proceed once issues of workers are addressed accordingly. In Bauchi State, the state executive secretary of the State Pension Commission, Ibrahim Inuwa, confirmed that despite the enactment of the CPS law in 2014, it is yet to be implemented. Despite its long-term payoffs, CPS is still full of hiccups across much of Nigeria in the form of mistrust, poor sensitsation, and lingering heritage issues in the public domain. The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with the leading health organizations, launched a public sensitisation campaign with the specific objective of sensitizing individuals on the control and prevention of meningitis. At a one-day program held at Sokoto South Local Government Congregation Hall, Sokoto State’s Health Commissioner Dr. Faruku Umar Abubakar said that to date, 300 individuals had become victims of meningitis, while 16 received treatment. He implored others also to take caution and hasten to hospitals when they experience any signs including high fever, vomiting, and stiffness of the neck. Hosted by the State Ward Development Committee (WDC) in association with the State Ministry of Health and Primary Healthcare Development Agency, the meeting brought together government officials, health professionals, and community leaders to debate methods of countering the outbreak. Sokoto state WDC chairman Comrade Bala Gadanga emphasized that the event was the first of its kind in Sokoto and was organized after experiencing a surge of meningitis infection in various local government areas. He emphasized how early diagnosis and treatment were required to avoid contraction of the illness. On behalf of Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar, Gagi District Head, Sani Umar Jabbi, congratulated the government of Governor Ahmed Aliyu on its forward-looking initiatives towards strengthening public health and reiterated the support of the traditional institution for initiatives concerning health in the state. Nigeria’s Church of the Brethren, known as Ekklesiyar ‘Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and legislators to stand firm in protecting Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that policy is for the greater good. In a passionate appeal during the church’s Majalisa 2025 event, the EYN President called on the president to be resolute against executive overreach and to prioritize people-centered leadership. He also called on senators and representatives in the House of Representatives to bear the shared responsibility of maintaining democratic values. The EYN President emphasized that all arms of government must respect press freedom as a key ingredient in any thriving democracy. Speaking on the topic, “A Living Church in a Decaying World,” Dr. Daniel Dali, a former President of EYN, called on Christians to be a beacon of hope and moral light. National transformation is everyone’s duty, he said. The General Secretary of the church, Rev. James Musa, informed the media that the yearly Majalisa provides the church community a forum to take stock of their faith, confront challenges, and celebrate successes as well as to chart the way forward. Reading a goodwill message to the conclave on behalf of National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Ambassador Kevin Peters urged the church to work with government efforts aimed at entrenching peace and reconciliation. Nigeria has been severely hurt by war. The church has a responsibility to guide healing, to call for forgiveness, and to help rebuild broken communities. Peace grows where forgiveness is planted, and revenge belongs to God,” Ribadu’s message stated. President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has advised African nations not to get involved in a tariff war with the United States but rather concentrate on forging strategic trade and investment partnerships. Presenting the 14th Convocation Lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), themed “Advancing Africa’s Positioning Within Global Development and Geopolitical Dynamics,” Adesina flagged the threat of new U.S. tariffs. He warned that they could trigger economic instability in Africa through undermining currencies, increasing inflation, and increasing the cost of debt servicing. Trade between Africa and the U.S. remains small. “It will be suicidal to fight a trade war,” Adesina said. He advocated for balanced trade relations and referred to Africa’s vast potential in infrastructure, agriculture, and mineral resources as attractive opportunities for U.S. investment. To safeguard the continent’s economies, Adesina called on African leaders to “tariff-proof” their nations by increasing domestic consumption, value addition, and full operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He said the era of relying on foreign aid is over, and Africa must now rely on disciplined investment, improved resource management, and improved governance. Irrefutably, aid has benefited poor communities, but no nation has ever developed with aid only. Africa must become self-reliant, especially in health security, with the same priority as national defense,” he continued. Adesina also advocated huge investments in education and technology for creating a highly skilled workforce and entrepreneurial entrepreneurs. He called on the universities to excel in medical and pharmaceutical research, and advised local manufacturing of vaccines and medications as a panacea to global uncertainties. The lecture was presided over by Professor Atahiru Jega, Pro-Chancellor, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, who underscored the need for developing graduates with learning and character. NOUN Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olufemi Peters, praised Adesina for delivering a thought-provoking and forward-thinking speech that touched on pertinent issues facing the continent. Controversial Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has faced severe criticism on the internet after he failed to publicly celebrate his daughter Danielle‘s birthday, which fell on April 10, 2025. While Danielle’s mother, May Edochie, celebrated the day with a heartfelt message on Instagram—along with goodwill messages from fans and industry colleagues—Yul’s silence has drawn criticism from social media users. Yul and Danielle’s strained relationship have been a topic of discussion in recent times, fueled by the actor’s never-ending drama with his estranged wife, May. The tension appeared to escalate when Danielle removed “Edochie” from her Instagram bio, signifying a possible emotional detachment from her father. A quick search by Gistreel confirmed that Yul did not post or mention his daughter’s birthday on his social media pages, and this has caused an avalanche of reactions on the internet. Opinions have been divided. While some believe Yul is entitled to his silence, others have slammed him for dereliction of parental responsibilities. One of the users, Adenike, commented, “The moment the daughter dropped his father’s name, she was no longer his daughter. Online in-laws cheered her when she childishly refused to answer Yul Edochie’s name, but you expect him to wish her a happy birthday?” Another user, Zita, chimed in, “All of una dey mad. Why didn’t the small girl celebrate her dad first? Who’s supposed to respect who? Benteke Thank God said, “When you offend your dad, you’re the one to apologize. If your dad offends you, you should still be the one to apologize. The young lady insulted her dad. Yul Edochie deserves to be apologized to.” Meanwhile, a user named Zion warned critics, “Chai, make una leave this man alone. One day he’ll sue you all, and your eyes will clear.   Related Posts Uriel was evicted, not Adekunle or Doyin. According to Gistreel reports, the news was released on Thursday at LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, which was held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo. Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, reiterated the commitment of the government to education, which he characterized as the bedrock of progress in society. “Education is the backbone of our society, and we need to continue celebrating academic success just as much as we celebrate success in entertainment or sports,” he said. He also renewed the government’s commitment to investing in the state’s tertiary institutions and stated that education remains at the heart of the THEMES+ development agenda. This includes improving infrastructure, student and staff welfare, and employability through initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos for final-year students. A fresh wave of scandal is rocking Nollywood after actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday was accused by renowned gossip blogger Cutie Juls of breaching a financial agreement with a group of young women. In a widely shared Instagram post, Cutie Juls claimed that Nkechi Blessing hired the women on the promise to pay them N250,000 each. Things, however, reportedly went wrong when the women reportedly received only N50,000 after they refused to do unspecified intimate acts. The blogger asserted that the young women were incensed by the experience and even threatened to expose their ordeal. In what appears to be a desperate attempt to douse the furore, Nkechi Blessing allegedly accused the women of theft—something most people believe was an attempt to deflect attention from the scandal. To make matters worse, an audio recording which leaked online has been making the rounds on the internet, reportedly featuring one of the young women in question.   Related Posts Uriel was evicted, not Adekunle or Doyin. Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has spilled a very tear-jerking account of one of the darkest moments in her life, exposing how she almost lost herself after the death of her mother in 2023. In a charged up interview session with media presenter Chude Jideonwo, the actress/producer candidly confronted the choking weight of bereavement, collapse of her union, defeat in the Lagos State governorship election, and exhausting stress of being under the spotlight. “I do not like to mourn,” she admitted. “When my mother passed away, I just wanted to get away from it as quickly as possible. I do not allow myself to fall apart, but that choice haunted me later—and I almost died.” Akindele insisted that she had held in her emotions in an effort to stay tough and keep working, but the repressed sorrow eventually took its toll on her mental and physical health. It all came to a head when she was pulled online for an accusation that she insists was completely unfounded. “For the first time, I picked up my phone and went live. I said, ‘Leave me alone! Do I know this guy? No. The guy came to work on my film, got paid, and left. Why am I being blamed for something I didn’t do?’” “Do you know what I’m going through?” she continued. “I’ve lost my mum, my marriage collapsed, I lost at politics, I have to go back to work, I have to earn money. I’m bringing up my children by myself—and you’re worrying me.” The actress said that scene triggered a meltdown she could no longer hide. “For the first time, I cried. I broke up for weeks.”.   Related Posts Uriel was evicted, not Adekunle or Doyin. Iyabo Ojo‘s drama film Labake Olododo is already shaking the Nigerian box office, raking in an impressive N172.5 million within two weeks of release. The film, which premiered in cinemas nationwide on March 28, debuted with a resounding opening weekend box office of N50.4 million—the second-largest opening for a Nollywood film in 2025. The box office figures, made available by FilmOne Group, indicate the film’s immediate popularity and bountiful word-of-mouth reception from the audience. Labake Olododo is one of a new crop of female-directed blockbusters to take the Nollywood world by storm. In the last year alone, a considerable number of woman-headed films have made waves at the box office.
